Hi there, I’m Katie.
I am the owner and financial coach behind Sustainable Finance.
Initially, I studied to be an English teacher and got my degree from Washington State University. I taught for a couple of years but found myself burnt out after pouring hundreds of hours into my work and receiving little support from administration. I briefly pursued a Masters of Counseling program at City University, and completed two quarters before deciding that wasn’t quite right fit, either.
It took me a while from there to realize coaching was a perfect amalgam of what I liked most about teaching and counseling. In the interim, I worked in administrative healthcare roles and began my own financial transformation. After my bank account hit a dangerously low balance in late 2016, I set a goal to save $10,000 the following year. This did require some sacrifices, but I was able to accomplish this goal while also being able to do things I cared most about. I then began consuming as many books as I could about habits and personal finance. I managed to turn my net worth from negative to positive within two years.
Inspired by Vicki Robin’s 2018 edition of Your Money or Your Life, I started sharing what I had learned regarding financial habits and mindset through coaching!
My first clients? My parents!
My parents have struggled with their finances for as long as I can remember. They’ve been through crippling credit card debt, bankruptcy, and foreclosure. They tried many times to get a handle on their finances. I distinctly remember they participated in the program offered by a prolific male figure in the financial space, and it helped… for a while. However, the habits faded over time because they weren’t sustainable for my parents. That program addressed surface level problems, but it did not get at the root causes.
At the end of 2019, I approached my parents and asked if I could help them analyze their finances. They agreed, and this analysis provided them tremendous insight to their spending habits (out of control and not aligned with their values) which allowed them to build an actionable plan to eliminate their debt and build up their savings.
Today, they never carry over a balance on their credit cards, they have eliminated ALL of their debt, and they’re on track to retire comfortably within the next seven to ten years!
I am passionate about helping others!
It is my goal to empower others to transform their money mindsets and financial habits to build sustainable growth. To me, “sustainable finance” means forging a financial path that can be followed for life.
